THE NEED
Future Educator Scholarships - Many graduates of Stafford Schools who are interested in pursuing a college degree in Education face a daunting financial challenge. With in-state tuition averaging $27K per year, and 40% of the student population economically disadvantaged, economic barriers can be insurmountable to many of our future educators.
Future Educator Scholarships have not increased with the cost of higher education. Although any funds are helpful, SEF is looking toward providing the initial award at $1000, then adding a second year at $2000 if the student declares an education major. There are typically 5 recipients per year or $5000 in scholarship funds. Should all continue their path toward education, the following year would be $10,000 for those moving into their sophomore year and an additional $5000 for the graduating high school seniors. For any given year, after the first year, SEF would need $20,000 to maintain this path.
OUR ROLE
Since 2009 SEF has provided Future Educator Scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing a degree in Education. 15 years ago, the scholarship was $500. In 2014 the amount was raised to $1000, where it remains today. In all, approximately $75,000 has been provided to graduating seniors. SCPS high schools provide a number of opportunities to students who are interested in becoming a teacher. Teachers of Tomorrow, Kiddie Hawks, Little Wolves are three of the most active. There are students who have had meaningful learning relationships with their teachers and are excited to enter the field of education. The next step for these students is the ability to pursue their passion to teach, and perhaps even return to Stafford County Public Schools to do so.
THE IMPACT
Scholarship funds are provided directly to the institution where the student will be attending. These funds can be used for tuition, housing, books or online platforms required by curriculum. View our 2024 Future Educator Scholarship winners using this LINK.
